Letter: to General R. Jones /by Zachary Taylor, 1840 Feb 24.

Zachary Taylor asks General Jones for the power to increase the militia in the future whenever it is necessary. Some of the officers felt that Taylor had overstepped his authority in commanding Colonel Warren to increase his battalion to a regiment without permission from Washington.

Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), the twelfth president of the United States. In 1841, he was appointed to the command of the Sourthern Division of the United States. In the spring of 1845, Taylor appointed to command the Army of Occupation stationed in Corpus Christi. In May 1846, Taylor led his army into north Mexico.
